The harbor almost froze over yesterday. Light winds in the morning saw a nice ice sheen forming way out from shore.
By 3 pm when I took these photos the wind had come up and the ice had broken up with ripples of water between the thin ice pans.
There is a bit of a warming trend so freeze up may be put on hold.
The below letter is posted at request of a reader in St. John's. Not sure how many readers are Inuk and at a recognized institution, and 'enrolled in post-secondary studies' narrows in down again, but here ya go anyways.
My name is Danielle McAllister and I am contacting you from the Inuit Art Foundation with an exciting scholarship opportunity for your students. Established in 1995, the Virginia J. Watt award was developed to encourage Inuit to pursue studies in Inuit art and culture. To qualify for the award the applicant must be a Canadian Inuk who is currently enrolled in post-secondary studies at a recognized institution whose studies are pursuing Inuit art and/or cultural studies.
For 2012, the award is valued at $2,000 and applications must be post-marked no later than February 1, 2012. Qualified applicants can apply either by email (iaf@inuitart.org) or by mailing their application to:

Many thanks,

In other news; there is a Transcribing Workshop on the go in the NG building this week. A prof from U of T is the driving force behind this. Said prof has been a great advocate for the retention and leaning of Inuktitut in different Labrador dialects for some years.
Said prof has a blog "that no one reads" so here is a ling to the blog no one reads.
