Four wheel vehicles.

ATV, Quad, 4 wheeler, all names for the same type of vehicle. The names have been in the news a lot lately, especially the island portion of the province. Not in a good sense either, many accidents involving young people, youth and older folk driving under the influence. Some of the people end up in hospital, some get lucky, and some end up dead. Tablemaountains has a good perspective on the subject.
As mentioned, most of the reports are on the Island, that’s not to say there are no accidents or even fatalities resulting from driving ATV’s in Labrador. It is more like accidents of that nature don’t get reported, either by the people involved or by the media.

In the past there have been fatalities and accidents here on the North Coast, here in Nain there is what’s seems to be an over abundance of ATV’s, not to mention cars, pick-ups heavy vehicles. It most likely seems worse than it is due to the fact the roads were just not built wide enough for this volume of traffic. In most areas of town vehicles have to share the road with pedestrians, dogs, bike riders, there is just no place else for them.

Most drivers/riders take care and act responsibly, some don’t. I think its more luck than good management that there are not more accidents; especially with young people ridding ATV’s with up to half a dozen on a machine. Then there are the speeders, sure wish more could be done about those idiots.

It often seems like there far more incidents involving recreation vehicles on the island in relation to Labrador. Population demographics could play a role here. Or it could be partly recreation being the key word on the island, while in Labrador [especially up here] these vehicles are used for everyday use, hence more experience.
Or it could be that riders are out in the open with many people around, a sort of deterrence to extremely stupid behavior, many of the incidents that do happen are in the night time.

All in all, as mentioned before, it’s more luck than good management.

One way to keep the traffic down would be to have weather like today, RDF and about 5 c. Very quite out there, holiday monday most likely contributing too.

Things will hot up next week with school back, the usual traffic jams four times a day.
