Catastrophic incident II

Spent yesterday afternoon alternating the borrowed generator between the computer, a heater, the freezer and lastly the TV. No news of the town’s plight on CBC Here&Now. Seems there is an election on and some conservative has an ABC campaign on the go, then there is the election down south. I’m sure if a town on the island had a water leak it would have at least earned a small mention. The CBC web site has a mention of the initial incident.

So at 6 PM I was just about to turn the generator off and return it when lo and behold our power came back on. Not knowing how long we would have power was a concern so I ramped up the thermostats to get as much heat into the house as possible.
We took a run around town later to see what was what. Seemed at the time that Hydro was ramping up power to the town small sections at a time, only one generator was operable at that time.

The hotel were told that that section of the grid would be one of the last as it draws lots of power, they would have to wait for the second generator to come on stream.

So it would seem most of the upper end of town has power, plus over the bridge who were the first back on line.

Hope to find out more news today, we have the radio transmitter sight back up and we will sniff out bits of information locally keeping in mind to fact check.

At least half a dozen generators arrived on the flights last evening. All were for individuals with good paying jobs or institutions with unlimited cash flows. Low and fixed income folk will have to do the best they can, like open fires outside to boil the kettle. I’m not bitter, just pointing out the widening income gape.

I was thinking of investing in a generator, even though we can’t afford it, or as one person pointed out maybe a wood stove. The stove would be cheaper, a small one, and it would have to be easy to manhandle as I would not want it in place all the time, only when then power is out, and who knows how many of those power outages there will be this coming winter.

Update:

CBC radio is reporting that the whole town was back on line by 10.30 pm last evening.
CBC is also reporting a Hydro warning that this is only a temporary fix and that the crews are working around the clock on a more permanent power supply. Hmmm.

UpUpdate:

Bigland is still without power, except for the 3 generators keeping some stuff working. Not sure of other 'institutional buildings, the school is closed this morning and may go back this afternoon.

Things are crook in Tallarook! I thought you had an oil heater. Maybe it needs power to operate? Hope it gets fixed before all that white stuff comes.

Haven’t heard that saying for a long time.
I have an oil fired furnace, needs power for the burner and the circulating pumps. Maybe that is another option to look at, an oil space heater, no power needed for those, in days past lots of houses had them, now most everything is relying on electricity.

Crikey! That hydro building is definitely on fire in the previous post. Good for the fire department getting it seen to so fast!
I haven't heard anything on CBC about this, but I haven't had the radio on all day.... but it probably pales in significance when I think about all the ridiculous election hoopla that is going on on both sides of the border.
I have a wind up radio and a wind up flashlight for emergencies, are such things available in Nain? If not, I could send you one.
Unfortunately I don't have a wind up freezer or a wind up furnace, I don't think they have been invented yet.

I have seen the odd wind up flashlight in the stores, they are not stocked regularly. Most people buy stuff like that through catalogue stores, or the internet. Not sure if wind up radios are popular with people with cabins taking into account the amount of batteries that are sold in the stores, at huge mark up I might add.

Truth be known most people [I know I did] enjoy the break from all that constitutes news from the outside world.

Thanks for the kind offer, will take a rain check, but as soon as the wind up furnaces come on the market you can send one.

That is not good. Oh man, that hydro station has had some problems...

Woodstoves weigh a tonne. I just removed one from my place (the feds paid you to put one in during the energy crisis, now they pay you to take it out). My spine may never be the same.

Hope this is fixed soon. The Nainemiuks are still all over facebook, so there must be some power!

Argh yes, we used wood stove as sole source of heat for 15 years, I miss the exercise it offered, alas the bod resists more of that hard yacka.
We are all hooked up again now, bits of the town at a time, all on tenterhooks though.
