Just some links to northern stories and one that the people in this province should take more interest in.
This is an interesting story, incomplete but interesting non the less. The story is incomplete in that the process apparently is a lot more complicated than indicated in this piece. There is a complex system of storing the heat produced deep in the ground and used as needed. There was coverage on CBC radio over the weekend but I can’t find a link to it
I guess these guys hope the Inuit in Greenland do not have modern communications, they seem to have been given a heads up.
Maybe this is why Susan is rumored to have gone vegetarian, or maybe that is due to her living in the big TO. That is not to say Susan is not a nice lady, she does do a lot to help younger people, or did when she visited Labrador some years ago.
CBC radio HV-GB did a piece this morning on the closure of Atlantic Wholesalers in Lewisport and the fact that they will no longer be serving about 300 odd retailers as I reported last week.
It is not known yet to what extent this will affect retailers but more importantly consumers.

I was just about to point out that CBC seems to be lagging behind your blog these days. I think you're probably on someone's Bookmarks list. Amazing that one guy with a computer and a voice can now beat an office full of people with all their doodads, doohickeys and flashing lights.
Can I make a request? You've done posts on some infrastructure lately and I'd like to know a little more about how many scientific field stations are now in Nain: environment Canada, Spaceship earth, etc... any pictures inside?

Besides the two mentioned there is just a magnetometer for the ‘centre for space physics’ at Boston U.
I will check to see if any thing in the Dept transport tower/trailer beacon. Have some pics, have to dig them out.
Fran dug up some old photos of a staff party up the Atsanik a few years back, nothing there to make any money though.

There is a polar year project on the history of research stations, but they've missed out on Labrador. Nain has a long history of science. The Moravians had their climate stations during the first International Polar Year. MacMillan had that research place out at Antalak (those pics of his Tin Lizzy on the OK site are great), and it was through him that the first electric generation came. He always had Inuit collaborators and workers. When we think of history we often think of agencies like the Moravians, the HBC, and the LIA, but scientific field stations have played a role in Labrador's development, and Inuit have played an active role. Scientists like EP "Pep" Wheeler, etc... also had a lot of Inuit friends, and they were always very critical of the government's uselessness in its dealings with Inuit. It would be interesting to know the whole history of science in a community all the way up to the present.
