Just back from the airstrip seeing Aimee off to Goose Bay, one month to delivery date.

Very fall'ish weather out there, chilly, drab hills, fog threatening to obscure them, gaggle of geese flew over heading north, not sure what that is about.

Later: Steps have been taken to hold Inuit Community Government elections, but in the Lake Melville area controversy still reigns as we move to holding a by-election to replace an ordinary member who was dismissed by the NG the assembly.

For the second time this week the NG first minister was on Labrador Morning, this time to answer concerns expressed Thursday that the voters lists in Goose Bay and North West River are woefully in disarray, or not up to date. There is no Podcast to link to for the second interview.

To his credit the first minister has spoken publicly on the issue, better a little late than not at all.

But the thing is the more we hear about voters list from NG the more confusing things become.

This time the concerns expressed are the lists contain deceased persons, people have moved from the area and are still on the list, people have moved into the area and are not on the list, people who have lost their ‘beneficiary’ status are still on the list, people who have gained their ‘beneficiary’ status are not on the list yadda yadda yadda.

According to the first minister it is not a NG priority [my words] to keep the voters up to date as NG does not have the resources to keep track of people, who die, move away move in, yadda yadda yadda.

The first minister said the onus is on the individual beneficiary, or the individual’s family in the case of deceased ‘beneficiaries,’ to inform the appropriate peoples within NG of any change in resident status.

So all in all a fine kettle of fish with the voter list within the land claims area and the upper lake Melville area.

I wonder could NG cross reference with the provincial and federal lists, at least they would get voters addresses, which seems to be another issue in Goose Bay. How does the feds and province handle all of the above issues with voters list fluctuating all the time, large banks of civil servants most likely.

At any rate the more one hears about voters list in Nunatsiavut the more questions arise.

Contrary to all the meteorologist predictions the sun is shinning here mid afternoon.

Brian, I followed your link from my mate's blog (Johnny in Wuhu). Also read what those intrepid cataman sailors had to say. So, we clear have a mutual concern and share some common interests. I had a hunch you might have an interest in things nautical so I wasn't surprised to find the fantastic vision (and enjoyable sound-track) of the Straits pilots. I crew on the Lady Nelson out of Hobart, Tassie. She's a full size replica of the original (it makes her Australia's smallest tall-ship!). I've teased out matters related to our shared concern via e-mail, if you get my drift ... or do I have to spell it out to a born banana-bender? Cheers, Guenter

I think I get where you are coming from Guenter, then again!

I hope your mate Johny in Wuhu has not stepped on any toes, he has been quite for awhile.

Generally, Canadians register with elections canada when they file their income tax. I'm sure Nunatsiavut can access that information as part of their agreement with the feds, but c'mon...the people running Nunatsiavut can't think of things like that themselves, and if you tell them they accuse you of interfering, so I suppose they will figure it out in a few years. That doesn't help wth the under 18 voters though, but I don't understand why children are allowed to vote anyway.

I suspect the voting age is so low due to people trying to push a certain agenda through during the ratification process, I doubt very mush it had anything to do with Inuit customs and traditions.

As to those under 18, well if the people were on the ball then all the relevant information SHOULD be available and the lists up to date.
Thing is people are not on the ball, there are quite a few youth who filed nominations with NG last year as requested. Many of those same people now have to re file fresh applications; the reason given is that THE APPLICATIONS WERE NEVER RECEIVED.

Who's on second again please.

I know firsthand that people hired into the government beaurocracy are given huge responsibilities with little experience and training, and are given free reign with no supervision so they do what they want, and this is the result. The majority don't know what they are doing and they are too stubborn to hire someone who does know what he's/she's doing when they aren't becificiaries. Soon the money is going to run out (if it already hasn't) that Nunatsiavut is getting from the feds to establish their goverment, and all its administration, and when it does all they will be left with is a dogs breakfast. We'll see who then will still be clamouring to get their names on the list of beneficiaries. Beneficiaries of nothing.

Does NG have a list-sharing agreement with either Elections Canada or Elections Dannystan?

Who knows WJM, maybe they do and maybe they don't.
Finding the person who would know would be like finding hens teeth, then you have to get past the zupper zecrete zociety cone of silence thingy prevalent within NG.
