"Historical occasion"

said the premier of the province and the president of Nunatsiavut Government of the Thursday joint cabinet meeting between the province and NG.
"My number one goal was to open up lines of communication and we have done that" said the president.

Maybe so maybe not but the provincial press, apart from the CBC, did not seem to give a rats arse about the occasion. I have not been able to find reference to the afore claimed historical occasion anywhere, not even the local CKOK radio.

CBC had small snippets on their radio On The Go show Thursday, and Here & Now a short piece on Thursday evening, but that’s it.

When pressed for some details the President answered in generalities, "we brought up transport, health, and yada yada issues" [paraphrased].
The premier was almost as evasive but did mention he brought NG up to date on the caribou situation.

The premier also boasted that his ministers have been visiting NG and Labrador quite extensively in the past couple of years, more than any time in the past twenty years.

Maybe so maybe not. If so then why was it necessary to meet now, it is five years since NG was formed. I know the province and especially NG are a tad somnolent, but five years? Plus what were the cabinet ministers and NG talking about with all this travel into NG these past years that is being touted.

All a big mystery, unless you’re are a big skeptic, it is nearing that time of year when some cheap shopping is on the minds of those who can avail.

I'm wondering if the Premier's main intention for this so called "Historical Occasion" was to get the Lower Churchill Project started sooner than later?

Brian, haven't you noticed that the President and ALL of the NG representatives/Ministers no longer provide any updates or news to the CKOK? Before, it was a usual occurrence, now it is a rarity.

This NG has lost all of its former so called ways. As soon as they became the NG, they became too proud for its beneficiaries. Every response is "we are a new government". How long are they going to play that record? Cripes, they were LIA for 30 years.

Don't think so, that is Innu territory, then knowing the Prem he may be trying the divide and conquer trick, worked before.

And yes I have noticed, that is why you only see questions or critiques here regarding NG, and it is not my job to do the asking and critiquing.

FYI, CKOK will air a very short interview with the President of NG this afternoon.

Labrador Inuit wanted self government because they didn't like being governed by whitey, so they could be in control of their own education, justice, whatever else... but all they've done is put their hands out to the feds and the province getting handout after handout, not doing a thing to build a system of self governance that will be self sustaining. As part of the land claim, they were to recieve something like 200 million a year for five years to establish the government and I'd say their time is about up and all they've done is squander their time and money and now NG president Lyall is panicking and trying to friendly with the province again for more handouts no doubt. The powers in charge had an opportunity to let the dream come to fruition (ie the one of self government) but they were so blinded with greed and pride that they have let down the entire Inuit population. The should all be highly ashamed of themselves. Oh, and that was so funny about the cheap shopping, but oh so true!
