One more "take'n me ball and going home" bullshit.

Stories like this do nothing to ‘surge’ the Newfoundland image.

I’m with the council on this, and hope they stick to their guns. Sure it’s great to knock back a few with your buddies, but not in the fire hall. If there is no other place in town for a social drink then start up a club or something, or go with out [the club that is] like many do.
If it is true that most fire halls in the country allow drinking on the premises it’s time for that to change.

i suspect there's more to this story then mentioned in the news article.

our firehall is also our community center. if a few volunteers drop by and clean the place up after a function, repair a broken table or so after a nuisance from a wedding,party.etc. the night before busted it. than i say who am i to tell him/her they can't have a beer afterwards.

I agree, the story was vague, could be the reporter’s style, editor’s style or the people who walked out as volunteers did not communicate their story well.
But there is the issue of insurance, as mentioned by the town mayor; as well I would think one of accountability if anything should happen if any excess drinking should occur.
I know the fire hall here is used for meetings of outside groups at times, I’m not aware of any alcohol being partaken of, either on the QT or with a temporary permit, that’s not to say it does not happen, but there is a bar and a beer outlet.
