Crickey mate, we have about 6 to 8 inches of snow on the ground this morning, and it is still falling.

Any way the excitement of the week was down in Hopedale yesterday afternoon.

A polar bear decided to pay the community a visit, people got excited, and not a little too curious.

Wildlife and RCMP members attempted to run it out of town with bear bangers and rifle shots in the air, to no avail judging by this photograph by Trudy Flowers.

In the end the bear was put down.

Wow... put down the bear? Was that the only solution? I thought that Polar Bears were an endangered species. What happened to tranqualizer guns and helicopeters with big cargo nets hanging from their underbellies for transport to a more remote location? Sad!!

Wow, seems a strange protocol to follow for us green-leaning city people! Is it because the bears are unpredictable and could cause harm to humans?
Kind of like in Africa where elephants cause havoc and sometimes human fatalities in farming villages.
Tis a shame, but hope the community can gain some benefit from the bear?

Back in the early 1960's a polar bear actually came ashore in rose blanche. That's south of where I live here. (It had to be shot) That's the only known instance of one appearing this far south that I have have heard of. Once ashore and roaming in a community there is usually only one option.
